Sainsbury's staff parties hard and raises raffle funds

The staff of Sainsbury's Didcot partied hard on  Sunday night (15th May) at their annual awards bash and still showed charitable spirit too in amongst the celebrations!

The colleagues of the year awards party was held at the Didcot Civic Centre celebrating all the very best of the store's outstanding staff and departments in one night - and as always with our Andrew as a honorary guest and former checkouts colleague - they sure knew how to party the night away.

17 categories was handed out at the party with awards including Team Leader of the Year, Manager of the Year, Checkouts Colleague of the Year to the big one - Store Colleague of the Year.   The store is always very generous and committed when it comes to raising money for good causes, such as with their local charity of the year partnerships, however this time they decided to hold a raffle on the night for two desginated and very special charities and alongside Diabetes UK, Play2Give was delighted to be one of the beneficiaries.

Sainsbury's Didcot raised an increible record £4,310 as part of their charity year in 2014-2015 for us, of which all the money raised benefited Oxford Children's Hospital and the John Radcliffe Paediatric Eye Fund as well as Headway Oxfordshire, and, is such that our organisation has remained a favourite amongst store staff.  This year alone we have had nightshift colleague Lee Crook hold a mega Easter Egg Raffle in March to Billy Collins, from groceries online, take on a sponsored slimathon to raise funds for Robin's Ward at the hospital.

The total raised from the raffle donated to Play2Give amounts to a great £64.75. The other half was raised for Diabetes UK - one of their colleagues, Chantelle, ran the London Marathon in May for the Diabetes charity and raised over £2,000! We would like to say and extend our hugest thanks to all our friends at the store for supporting Play2Give in this way at their Colleague of the Year Awards 2016 - it was very much a great, lovely surprise and gesture!

PictureAndy hands over a £925 cheque to Charlie at Headway Oxfordshire
An astounding amount of money was raised by our sixth fundraising party last month that today (17th May) it was presented to Headway Oxfordshire - making the charity's day - and hundreds of brain injury survivors who rely enormously on the vital service that the organisation provides.

The evening raised a record breaking £846.40 - the most that any of our parties have ever raised in history - and with the proceeds raised from our football match back in March - which raised £78.66 for both Headway and the John Radcliffe Children's Hospital - Andy today handed over the grand cheque to the brain injury support charity in Kennington totalling £925.06. This is P2G's biggest single cheque ever donated to date!

At the party last month, hosted by Didcot Football Club and sponsored by Tom Houseman Heating and Plumbing, we awarded Headway Oxfordshire with a framed certificate for Charity of the Year 2015/16 (which Charlie  Hayes, events & publicity officer for the charity, is pictured holding, left of Andy).   The football match, held on a very cold Saturday afternoon in March at Oxford City Football Club, saw the Headway Heroes team beat P2G Stars 4-3.

Our next event for Headway is our annual football tournament on July 3rd, at Oxford City Football Club, and of which the Children's Hospital will also benefit from all proceeds raised.   This 6 a side adults contest is open to mens and mixed adults teams, and entries are open.  More details about the football tournament

We were delighted to be represented at this year's prestigious  Oxfordshire Charity and Volunteer Awards ceremony held recently on May 11th.

This annual prestigious evening, and held at Oxford Town Hall, saw Play2Give recognised amongst so many charities and groups as well as individual outstanding volunteers for incredible charitable work and spirit across the county, and we were delighted to be nominated.

This year, we were nominated in not just one but two categories. We was up for two hotly contested categories, 'Best Team of Volunteers' and 'Charity of the Year'. Sadly, we didn't win in either category, but we were up against stiff strong incredible competition and we are not disheartened at all, we are just delighted to have been nominated and recognised in the beginning by supporters including Mike Foster from Didcot who nominated us.

The event is an annual event organised by Oxfordshire Community & Voluntary Action (OCVA) and showcases the wonderful everyday work and heroism of many incredible charities, groups and individuals all making a positive difference to people and even animal's lives across the county, and we were very humbled to be present and part of such a special evening and in amongst such great colleagues in the sector.

The Charity of the Year 2015/16 went to My Life My Choice, a self-advocacy organisation helping people with learning disabilities in  Oxfordshire to live the life they choose. In 2015 MLMC had its highest ever income, won national acclaim for its campaigning work, pressing health authorities to learn lessons from the death of Oxford teenager Connor  Sparrowhawk whilst three members were selected to serve on Guideline Committees at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), whilst members are working with NHS England to inspect services. MLMC has expanded its services for young people in Oxfordshire, opening three new self-advocacy groups for young people with learning disabilities. More information on this very well deserved charity of the year's award win can be read

Whilst the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2016 went to Aspire Oxford. Established in 2001, Aspire Oxford is a social enterprise with charitable status, creating more and more work opportunities for people facing barriers to employment.  Our friends at Headway Oxfordshire was also short-listed in the top 3 for their 28 years of wonderful care and support to adults living with acquired brain injuries and their carers and families.
The Best Team of Volunteers Award went to Cogges Manor Farm in Witney - a volunteer supported organisation ensuring continued public access to a much treasured community asset, whilst this year's Innovation Award went to Farm Ability - a charity supporting adults with autism and learning disabilities providing access to meaningful activities that improve their well-being and increased independence, enabling them to participate actively in their communities.

In total 10 Charity gongs was handed out, whilst 51 volunteers received individual awards.  See all the winners and awards news

Night of fun and dance raises record for Headway

5/10/2016

Our night of fun and fundraising held last month raised a record sum of money for Headway Oxfordshire with an amazing £846.40 collected all from just ticket sales, raffle proceeds, and doughnut eating contest!

This was the most amount of money ever raised from a Play2Give evening and the sixth one saw a hilarious doughnut eating challenge where 7 competitors took on the might of 100 jam filled doughnuts with the winner, David Allan, from London who ate 6 in just two minutes. What a sweet accomplishment!

On the night we presented Headway Oxfordshire with a pleasant surprise - we handed them a framed certificate for being our very own 'Charity of the Year 2015/16'. We felt they deserved some recognition and celebration for having supported adults living with brain injuries so well over 28 years,  being a small county charity that doesn't get enough recognition, as well as surviving against the odds over the past few months against Oxfordshire County Council cuts in funding.

The fantastic disco provided by the wonderful Utopia Disco got a lot up on their feet dancing the night away, and our mega raffle saw a fantastic 32 prizes donated by lots of local and beyond businesses.  We would like to say a huge thank you to Didcot Town Football Club for hosting the event, to Utopia, who also donated £200 back in, to our sponsor Tom Houseman Heating and Plumbing, as well as to Greggs for donating 100 jam doughnuts, all those companies who donated raffle prizes, all those who attended, supporters and to two of our newest volunteers, Luke Norris and Emma Collis.

See all of the pictures from the evening here

In 2017 we celebrate our big tenth year and we have plans to host a very special evening to mark 10 incredible years of fundraising and charitable support.
