St Birinus adds up a super school sum

A super sum adds up by St Birinus School

When it comes to such superb support, the school where fundraising all began for our founder can be counted on.

Since 2016 St Birinus School in Didcot has really added on the pounds in such fantastic ways for Play2Give to continue the fundraising that our Andy Baker started as a year 10 schoolboy.

Andy, who was a pupil at the school from 2001, embarked upon his fundraising crusade whilst aged 14 to help raise funds for the building of the Oxford Children's Hospital, which was his inspiration. Andy had received treatment at the former Radcliffe Infirmary a few months before he joined the school as a year 9 pupil aged 13. It was his involvement in the launch of the community £15million fundraising campaign by the Oxford Mail in September 2002  that propelled Andy to get St Birinus to support his efforts with a dream of just £500 to give back as a "thank you" for his treatment, to brain surgery aged 12.

That dream turned into £1,000 raised from a non school uniform day on Valentines Day 2003, and he has never looked back since, and nor as the school community as they continue to support our fundraising organisation which Andy founded in September 2007.

Andy inspired and coordinated the school's fundraising activities over a five-year period, which also saw the sixth form carry out endeavours and a year's worth of support from Didcot Girls' School, from 2006 to 2007, where a large part of Andy's A-level studies took place, until he graduated year 13 in August 2007.

Since 2016 the community of St Birinus have continued to raise funds and got behind our mission of changing, transforming and saving lives across Oxfordshire. With numerous non-uniform and Christmas jumper days, to cake sales and even donations raised from an It's a Knockout event in July 2017, to pupils and families donating hundreds of toys and presents as part of our annual "Sleigh2Give" festive drive every year, the school in funds alone has raised over £2,560!

On March 25th, Andy was delighted to visit the school, and meet with Will Manning the Headteacher for a celebration of his twenty year milestone in fundraising, and to present the school with a certificate of appreciation. Will also delighted to finally see Andy's MBE in person.

A huge thank you to all at the school for the ongoing wonderful support to Play2Give, and to continue the fundraising legacy that Andy began two decades ago, the support for such an incredible local cause set up by a former St Birinus student who continues to inspire and motivate is really special and the school hopes to help raise funds and be involved in our 15th birthday year of fundraising this year.
