Charity Football Match: Sunday 14 September 2014
Sainsbury's Superstars v Play2Give Allstars
Sainsbury's Making Life Better certainly came true through raising laughs as well as money with a recent charity football match.
A team of staff from the Didcot supermarket pulled on their football boots and took part in a football match to raise funds for Play2Give's charities as part of their year long worth of support. The game took place at the Loop Meadow Stadium, home of Didcot Town Football Club, who generously hosted and supported this event.
The football match, held on September 14th and contested against a Play2Give team, was the first fundraiser in the store's fundraising calendar. It raised over £232 - a cracking start to their partnership to raise funds with Play2Give over the coming 12 months for the charities P2G tirelessly fundraises for:- Oxford Children's Hospital, Headway Oxfordshire and the John Radcliffe Paediatric Eye Fund.
However the store's staff were no match despite trying their hardest against the mighty Play2Give Allstars, and lost 20-1, with Play2Givers taking the P2G Cup Sponsored by the Paediatric Eye Fund home. The PEF's chairman, Dr C K Patel, Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital, sponsored the cup himself paying out of his own pocket as a 'thank you' to P2G for all the support we have shown towards the PEF since 2013.
Even Didcot's very own furry mascot, Chipper the Squirrel, from The Treehouse Play Centre, made a special appearance and joined in the fun and collected coffers in from the spectators all helping to raise this very good sum.
After the thrilling match, players and spectators gathered in the clubhouse to enjoy past match drinks and nibbles, with Sainsbury's feeling rather somewhat deflated with the blues.
Thank you to each and every one of the wonderful ladies and gents who played, to all of the supporters, to The Treehouse Play Centre in Didcot, Chipper, Didcot Town FC, and to all of the Sainsbury's staff who worked hard to put on this fundraiser! Bring on next year's fundraising match when the P2G Allstars will be determined to hang onto the cup!
