Paediatric Eye Fund

Play2Give has been delighted to lend its support to the Paediatric Eye Fund (Charity No. 1057295, Fund 2134), part of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds.
Over 2 years since 2014, we had managed to raise and donate over £3,340 to this fund which included two fundraising evenings, proceeds from a Monster race, a slice of proceeds from Oxfordshire Sports Awards and a year's partnership with Sainsbury's Didcot all making up this wonderful grand total for the PEF.
PEF, a small fund (Fund 2134, part of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds), was formed in 2011, and based within the Oxford Eye Hospital of the John Radcliffe Hospital, raises funds for pioneering diagnostic equipment and research into childhood eye disorders. Over the past five years, Eye Hospital staff have raised £3,000, with our help, for imaging equipment for young patients for the PEF.
PEF's aim for the purchase of incredible diagnostic equipment to help children and premature babies born with eye sight threatening diseases. The fund was set up by C K Patel, Consultant Ophthalmologist at the JR, together with a team of staff.
Hundreds of babies are born prematurely in the Oxfordshire region and this can lead to many conditions affecting eye sight specifically.
Through funds raised, such as that of Play2Give's support, we have helped them towards their aim of purchasing incredible pieces of diagnostic equipment that revolutionises the way and speed these children are being diagnosed. This included a purchase of a RET-CAM - a revolutionary piece of kit used to photograph the retina of infants with a range of disorders, from cancer of the retina to Retinopathy of prematurity and shaken baby injury.
As of 2016 the staff at the Oxford Eye Hospital based at the John Radcliffe are fundraising £86,000 in total - £36,000 for a scanner for the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) and £50,000 for a camera for imaging blood flow in the retinas of premature babies in the JR Hospital's Special Care Baby Unit.
This camera for the SCBU will help with image blood flow in the retina helping understand the mechanisms by which the disease occurs, leading in the future to potential improvements in management.
Whilst, at present, children with inflammatory eye conditions - causing inflammation in other tissues - have appointments at the NOC's Paediatric Rheumatology Clinic. Then some need a photograph of their retina at the JR Eye Hospital, to detect any such condition. Having a separate scanner at the NOC will mean staff will be able to see children in the same day to quickly diagnose and treat any problems.
As a result of the fantastic work done by PEF, they were shortlisted in the 2015 Oxfordshire Charity & Volunteer Awards, held at Oxford Town Hall in February 2015. This was a great recognition of the work and success they have had since being formed. Sadly they wasn't crowned winners in their category of 'Innovation' but they were rightly deserved runners-up for their incredible work.
